Banishing Bed Bugs

Spring 2009

Housekeeping

BanishingBedBugs-1.jpgBed bugs do not make good bed fellows. A trained housekeeping staff should be able to spot bed bugs while performing their routine duties and quickly respond to infestations.

Bed bugs do not have nests like bees, but they do tend to congregate in hiding places. Indications of infestation are dark brown or reddish spots or stains, which are the dried excrement of the bugs. Also present will be eggs (which are hard to see with the naked eye), cast skins of the bugs, and, of course, the bugs themselves. Another likely sign of bed bugs is rusty or reddish spots of blood on bed sheets, mattresses, or walls.

Bed Bug Banishing Procedures

All MasterCorp housekeepers are trained to check beds, linens, mattress pads, pillows, and headboards for visible bed bugs.

If bed bugs are identified at your resort:

  • All linen, mattress pad(s), pillows, and bed spreads must be contained, sealed, and labeled in a clear plastic bag for disposal or proper cleaning.
  • The unit should be “closed” until properly treated by a pest control professional.
  • After treatment, the unit and carpet should receive a complete maintenance deep cleaning.
  • After the unit has been cleaned, all vacuum bags must be disposed to avoid cross contamination and proliferation through eggs.

Afterwards, the unit should be inspected for any signs of remaining bugs both by housekeeping and by the pest control company prior to occupancy by a guest.
