Carpet Corner: Spots & Stains

Housekeeping

CarpetCorner-1.jpgConsidering all ofthe time your housekeeping staff may spend maintaining your carpets, no one wants to see a spot or stain in the carpet of a freshly cleaned room. Dirty-looking blotches on guestroom carpets can ruin that critically important first impression.

Spots and stains that take seconds to create can linger after many cleanings if not treated properly. One common carpet cleaning mistake is not rinsing thoroughly after cleaning or spotting carpet. Similar to washing your hair after you add the shampoo, if you don’t rinse properly, you have a mess. The remaining residue on the carpet will actually attract more dirt and make the stain worse.

Other carpet mistakes include over-agitating or scrubbing, which can damage carpet fibers; failing to clean carpeting after stains or spots have appeared; and lacking an effective preventative carpet maintenance program.

Knowing the type of carpet being used in your facility aids greatly in the maintenance. The two most common types are nylon and olefin. Olefin is popular due to its ability to resist dye stains from soft drinks and wine. Nylon, which represents 60% of commercial carpeting, has a high resiliency factor.
