Goo Be Gone
Summer 2011
Housekeeping
There it was! A resort guest with young children had left a large sticker adhered to the surface of the table. Although the sun through the window had baked it on, the housekeeper had carefully peeled the sticker off, leaving a big square of goo that wouldn’t respond to any of the cleaners on the cart. Now, what do you do?
Try dabbing the area with a piece of tape or sticker, which uses the adhesive on the tape to pull the other adhesive from the surface. Sometimes this method helps, but rarely gets all the adhesive from the surface...and the room must show no evidence of human presence.
Don’t despair. A homemade solution of warm water, liquid dish-washing detergent, and vinegar will usually do the trick. Also, there are products, like Goof Off® and Goo Gone®, specifically formulated to dissolve adhesives and other hard-to-remove goo.
Don’t assume the ‘cure’ won’t harm the surface. First test the cleaning removal material on an area that is less conspicuous to be sure it will not damage that surface.
Saturate the adhesive with the solution of your choice and wait a few moments. Once it is dissolved, the goo can be easily scraped off with either a toothbrush or a flat plastic scraper.
If one method doesn’t work for your particular sticky spot, wash off the remainder of the remedy you tried and choose another. Once the adhesive goo has been removed, clean the surface as you normally would.
