Tips for Removing Small Disasters
Summer 2006
Housekeeping
Occasionally, housekeepers face small disasters that require measures outside their normal cleaning techniques. Following are a few tips that work for us.
To Remove Gum from Carpets:

What You Need:
- Ice
- Baggie
- Dull knife
Steps:
- Place an ice cube in a baggie.
- Put ice on gum in carpet.
- Wait until gum completely freezes.
- Scrape gum from carpet using a dull knife.
Bonus Tip:
This technique also works with gum in hair or on clothing.
To Remove Candle Wax from Carpets

What You Need:
- Dull Knife
- Paper Bag
- Iron
Steps:
- After wax hardens, scrape up excess with dull knife.
- Place part of paper bag over remaining wax.
- Place a warm iron over the bag and press gently.
- Repeat until all the wax is transferred to the paper.
Bonus Tip:
If the wax was colored and leaves a stain on the carpet, pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a rag and gently dab the stain.
