Changing Linens Can Be Costly

Housekeeping Management

Linen management is not a new concept within the hospitality industry. That’s why a resort manager knows how imperative it is to devise a plan to control linen inventory. When it comes to the bottom line, extending the life of linen has become an important factor in managing costs. Accordingly, it is important to understand usage and replacement ratios.

This practice has been followed for many years in the textile industry. Following are some textile replacement ratios and uses for selected linen items:

Linen Item Textile Replacement Ratio Use Per Item
Flat Sheets 1.70% 59
Mattress Pads 3.80% 26
Pillow Slips 2.35% 43
Bed Blankets 2.25 44
Bath Towels 4.61% 22
Hand Towels
6.58% 15
Washcloths 9.09% 11
Bath Mats 2.60% 38
Dish Cloths
5.30% 19

Replacement ratios are determined by the number of new pieces placed into service (within a given period of time) divided by the total number of pieces used during the same period.

Example: 1,600 new bath towels ÷ 34,707 = 4.61% replacement ratio

Uses per item are determined by dividing 1 by the replacement ratio.

Example: 1 bath towel ÷ .0461 = 22 uses

Cost per use is determined by dividing the cost of the item by the uses per item.

Example: $4.19 bath towel cost ÷ 22 uses = $.01904 per use

Once an operating par level (we recommend a minimum of no less than three par) has been determined and installed, linen replacement ratios can prove very helpful in budgeting to have an adequate linen inventory on-hand at all times.
