Chemical Use & Storage
Summer 2011
Safety
Sustaining a healthy environment for guests and staff involves the responsible use and storage of cleaning supplies and chemicals. Following are a few suggestions for sustainable chemical safety and storage.
Chemical Spraying
- Use the coarse spray setting (in between mist and stream); mist can saturate the air with chemicals and stream can splash
- Spray onto a cleaning cloth, not directly onto the surface...unless visible soiling is present
Chemical Storage
- Place absorbent mats on each chemical shelf for spill containment
- Store chemicals by their compatibility group, not alphabetically
- Do not store alkalines next to acids, and do not store incompatible chemicals on the shelf below
- Shelve all chemicals at eye level or below - never on a top shelf where solution could spill when retrieved
- Properly vent and cool storage areas
- Clearly identify all chemicals and solutions with labels
Storage Room Safety
- First aid supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be available nearby
- An eyewash station should be nearby, along with chemical spill clean-up supplies
- Emergency phone numbers should be posted in the housekeeping office
To sustain responsible chemical use and storage among your housekeeping staff, consider appointing a champion who inspects the storage room each day and trains on proper use.
