Operating a Safe Laundry

Summer 2006

Safety

OperatingSafeLAundry-1.jpgEveryone strives for a safe laundry for the benefit of the employees and the facility. The following guidelines for a safe laundry are suggested by the Milnor Corporation, a leading manufacturer of commercial washing machines.

  • Regularly check door interlocks on washer extractors. Ensure that the door cannot open if the washer basket is turning and that the basket promptly stops turning if the door is opened.
  • If the washer basket continues to turn while the door is open, remove the machine from service and call a technician.
  • Keep your dryer lint screens clean to reduce the risk of fire and allow for proper airflow and operation.
  • Attach magnetic signs to your dryers that prompt the operator(s) to clean the lint screens at standardized times during the operation day.
  • Use folding tables that are the proper height and adjust operator workstations to reduce fatigue and increase overall productivity. Typically, the suggested height for proper operation is approximately 36” above the floor.
  • Process goods directly from the dryers.  Items should be folded immediately to prevent poor quality and to avoid additional processing.
  • Avoid placing hot, dry goods in a basket, which can cause spontaneous combustion.
  • Have the laundry area cleaned each day.
  • Mop up any water on the floor in the washroom.

A clean, safe laundry sends the proper message to both your customers and employees.
