Safety Outlook: Preventing Slips, Trips & Falls
Spring 2004
Safety
Statistics show that falls cause 17% of occupational injuries. Additionally, same-level falls (slips and trips) account for 66% of fall injuries. These injuries are preventable when implementing a falls prevention program. The following are some important guidelines to consider:
- Ensure that “caution” mats are installed when carpet has been cleaned and is still damp. Do not use a vacuum cleaner or any electrical appliance when carpet or floors are wet.
- Watch out for floors that have been waxed, as well as other slippery surfaces.
- Be mindful of any rug that hasn’t been tacked down or does not have a rubber mat under it.
- When cleaning a Jacuzzi, use extra caution when stepping out. It is a good idea to place one towel in the tub and one on the floor to use as you step out.
- Be conscious of icy places, such as walkways, drives, porches and steps. Hold on to handrails if available, and go slowly. Promptly report potential hazards to appropriate personnel.
- Do not get in a hurry and take shortcuts.Wet grass and hidden holes in lawns cause many accidents.
- Use special care going up and down stairs. Use handrails if available and take one step at a time.
- When carrying objects, make sure they can be carried comfortably and vision is not blocked.
- Wear non-skid shoes to work.
